Last Thursday (October 24th) 300 delegates gathered at Dublin Castle for ‘Dying is Everyone’s Business' – the Irish Hospice Foundation’s (IHF) Forum on End of Life in Ireland. This is the sixth conference on death, dying and bereavement that the IHF has hosted.
The event brought together individuals working in different aspects of this area including; Keynote Speaker Dr. Kathryn Mannix, author of the international bestseller With The End in Mind. Dr. Mannix trained and worked in palliative medicine for 30 years in the North of England in hospices, patients’ homes and hospital palliative care teams.
Aoife Watters (CEO) and Mervyn Colville (Deputy CEO) of Glasnevin Trust facilitated a workshop called, ‘Funerals, Past, Present, and Future’.
The Dublin Cemeteries Committee, operating as Glasnevin Trust, was established in 1828. In almost 200 years of providing the essential service of burying and cremating the dead, and as the biggest funeral services provider in Ireland, Glasnevin Trust is well placed to discuss the changing practices in the Funeral Sector. The Trust recently commissioned Behaviours and Attitudes to carry out extensive market research in this area. This is the first time in Ireland that research has been carried out regarding changing attitudes to burials and cremations. The results of this study were discussed at the workshop.
Speaking about the event, Aoife Watters CEO of Glasnevin Trust commented, ‘On behalf of Glasnevin Trust, we were honoured to have been asked to contribute to the recent Irish Hospice Foundation’s 2019 biennial Forum covering the theme – Dying is Everyone’s Business. Congratulations to the Irish Hospice Foundation, a fantastic high impact national charity for an essential and highly interesting national conference on dying, death and bereavement in Ireland. We were delighted to share the findings of our recently commissioned research on the Irish approach and experience of death’.
