Best International Museum at Museum & Heritage Awards For Excellence in London

Glasnevin Museum has been honoured as the Best International Museum at the Museum & Heritage Awards for Excellence in London, England. Created by Martello Media and opened last year (April 2010), the Museum has now won five national and international awards including the Thea Award in Hollywood, USA in March this year.
The other nominees in the Best International Museum category were:
 
· NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA
· The Museum of Islamic Arts, Cairo, Egypt (Highly Commended)
· The National Charter Monument, Bahrain
 
The Museum & Heritage Awards judges felt that Glasnevin Museum showed evidence of creativity, sensitivity and true excellence. The Judges were:
 
· Diane Lees - Director General, Imperial War Museum
· Sam Mullins - Director, London Transport Museum
· Matthew Tanner MBE - Director & Chief Executive, ss Great British Trust
· Marie Roberts - Editor, M&H Magazine
· Bernard Donoghue - Chairman, London International Festival of Theatre
 
The Chairman of Glasnevin Trust, Mr John Green said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award from our neighbours in London. The Museum & Heritage Awards will help raise awareness for Glasnevin Museum in the UK from where many of our international visitors come. UK interest in Glasnevin has increased following our collaboration in recent years with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to honour the graves of soldiers of the two great wars buried in the cemetery.”

Thea Award

Glasnevin Trust is honoured for it’s Glasnevin Museum to have won an internationally renowned Thea Award for Outstanding Achievement from the Themed Entertainment Association in Burbank, California. The awards, now in their 17th year, recognise and honor excellence in the creation of extraordinary visitor experiences, attractions, exhibits and places worldwide. Glasnevin Museum is the first Irish Museum ever to win a ˜Thea”.

 
The award has been presented at a gala ceremony in the Globe Theatre, Universal Studios, Hollywood on the 12th March 2011. The Globe Theatre is also the venue for the Oscar Awards.

Previous winners of the award include Madame Tussaud’s in London; the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, Illinois; the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony; EPCOT - Walt Disney World, Orlando and the Shuttle Launch Experience at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

Commenting on the Thea Award for Glasnevin Museum, the Chairman of Glasnevin Trust, Mr John Green, said: “The Thea Award validates our belief that the Museum is a world class visitor attraction. The recognition this award brings will help us to maintain the Cemetery, to the highest standards, in perpetuity. Glasnevin Trust commissioned the internationally renowned exhibition specialists, Martello Media, based in Sandycove, to create the Museum’s exhibits. Led by their Managing Director, Mark Leslie, the Martello Team has won numerous awards since it was established in 1986 including a Thea Award in 2007 for Cosmos at the Castle, Blackrock Castle, Cork. In addition to the Thea for Glasnevin Museum, this year Martello Media has also seen its work on the Ireland Pavillion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China receive no fewer than three awards.
